Michael Eccles is the Managing Director of a successful specialist property renovation company dedicated to the authentic repair of fine buildings.

With an MBA from the Durham Business School, Michael is also an alumnae of Arthur Andersen Consulting, and has an international background in management consultancy and project management.

He began working in the building industry when still at school. Later, while developing his own property business, he qualified as a first- and second-fix joiner from the Wimpey Craft Training Centre in 1984. He went on to train as a cabinet-maker at the London College of Furniture.

Michael deepened his interest in heritage restoration and renovation whilst undertaking repairs to Victorian and Edwardian properties in London during the 1980s and 90s. Since 2002, he has worked as Project Manager on the Brookfield House Renovation Project – a complex of Medieval, Jacobean and Georgian buildings in the centre of Hay-on-Wye. It was during this exciting time that Michael first integrated a Nu-Heat warm water underfloor system into a Grade II listed property.

“Underfloor heating is an ancient yet sophisticated way to heat a home and works well in both modern and period properties. Period properties are of particular interest to us; they need to be treated very carefully, and are particularly suited to the introduction of underfloor heating.”

“I conducted extensive research into underfloor heating suppliers as I wanted to find a company that could offer expert advice and support. Nu-Heat fitted the bill. With Nu-Heat expertise, I now know that when I want to fit underfloor heating, I have the backing and support to intelligently resolve the complicated issues I can be faced with, given some of the unusual construction methods used in older buildings.” said Michael.

“They were able to offer advice and support on the use of underfloor heating in the restoration of period properties, and provided techniques that helped us with the smooth running of our project.”

“Installation went without a hitch and the residents of the first three phase of the Brookfield Renovation Project are as snug as a bug!”

Since they first introduced underfloor heating into a listed building, Michael’s company has integrated Nu-Heat underfloor heating into every type of project, with a variety of boilers and floor covering combinations including flagstone and oak.

"In our latest project, Brookfield House, a Jacobean property, we are using a full Nu-Heat system, introducing underfloor heating throughout the building. Underfloor heating is an ancient technology and was used widely by the Romans in Britain. It has taken us two thousand years to reintroduce it as a modern heating solution for period properties. As we are interested in doing what is best for our properties, we will continue to integrate underfloor heating whenever appropriate and possible in future projects.”

“I would definitely recommend Nu-Heat to anyone thinking about underfloor heating.”

The Brookfield House Renovation Project has been nominated for the 2005 Design and Conservation Award by the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority.
