Mark Kandes training with Nu-Heat
The South Devon Coastal Renewable Energy Network has funding available for a limited number of plumbers, apprentices and NVQ graduates who are resident in South Devon to attend generously subsidised renewable heat technology installation courses at one of three training centres.
With the proposed introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) in October 2012, which will offer tariff payments to householders who have eligible installations of heat pump, solar thermal and biomass heating systems, there is a pressing need for installers who are properly trained with the products. In order for access to the tariff payments, both product and installer must have Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certification. This is only available to installers who have attended accredited courses.
The subsidised courses are available at South Devon College in Paignton, SWAAT in Liskeard and Nu-Heat’s NRTC in Honiton. There are pre-requisites, including Unvented Hot Water and Water Regs and if these are not already in place, those courses must be taken by the individual at full cost prior to attending the installation courses.
Funding for the training is from the South Devon Coastal Local Action Group, which aims to help 10 or more suitably qualified candidates have access to this specialised training. Applicants must be resident in specific South Devon locations which can be identified on the website. Funding is available until March 2012.
Experienced installer Mark Kandes who recently undertook the subsidised training with Nu-Heat said of the heat pump course; ‘This is the first time I’ve actually seen the product. I now have a good understanding of how heat pumps work and how to install them.’ Mark also commented that it was useful to have insider guidance on the requirements for MCS accreditation. He was also pleased to learn that by booking both the heat pump and solar thermal courses with Nu-Heat, he received a free underfloor heating course.
Although in its infancy, the renewable heating market is a growth area, and by undertaking training now, installers will be in pole position when it really starts to take off.
