Nu-Heat Retrofit UFH product offers potential boiler upgrade opportunity

With many households looking to increase the efficiency of their heating and hot water system, a new underfloor heating floor construction aimed at the refurbishment market also offers opportunities for the installation of new oil boilers.

Nu-Heat’s new UFH floor construction, LoPro10™ is a practical retrofit product for householders looking to improve their heating system. The product is suitable for refurbishment properties with insulation upgrades to the required levels or most properties built within the last 10 years within the higher insulation requirements of Building Regs.

Where UFH has traditionally had slower response times than radiator systems, LoPro10™ has one-third less thermal mass than a screed floor, allowing it to heat up and cool down rapidly, making it more economical to run in retrofit properties. The floor construction’s low thermal resistance and high-density properties provide a high thermal output compared to similar low height plywood and chipboard based systems.

LoPro10™ can be installed quickly, without needing to remove the deck. With a height of just 15mm, it is perfect for retrofitting into properties able to accommodate this build-up. Tiles can be fixed directly to the LoPro10™ panel, and carpet and UFH-compatible underlay can also be laid directly on top, without the need for a ply deck. Engineered wood floors can be ‘floated’ directly over the panel.

LoPro10™ offers potential for oil installers to increase their revenue, as with the advent of the Green Deal, homeowners off the gas grid who decide to make insulation upgrades and install LoPro10™ are also likely to look at installing a new oil condensing boiler.

The efficiency of a warm water UFH system with an oil condensing boiler has major benefits over electrical UFH, particularly with regard to cost. A recent comparison showed costs of LoPro10™ with oil at 6p per kWh, against electric UFH at 12/14p per kWh, meaning that warm water UFH costs at least half as much to run. Although the initial cost for a water-based system may be more than an electric system, the payback will be relatively quick as the system will be far less expensive to run.

Nu Stat Range

Nu-Heat has launched a new, wider range of thermostats to meet the more sophisticated needs of its energy efficient heating systems.

Over recent years, the way that controls are thought about has changed immensely, with more attention being paid to the part they play in a heating system. This can be attributed to an increased awareness of the benefits of not using more energy than is actually necessary, thus improving the carbon footprint of a home.

Controls are especially important with underfloor heating or renewable heating systems and Nu-Heat felt that there was a need for a range that met the twin needs of flexibility and integration. The new range was implemented after discussions within installers at a series of seminars.

These installers commented that they would like to see simple wall-mounted dial versions and Smart App options. They also agreed that the best thermostat available has always been a deluxe low voltage type. Nu-Heat’s new offer includes options to fulfil these expectations.

Floor stats, room stats and bathroom stats now have a uniform look, giving a clean, consistent appearance to the control element of the heating system.

Each thermostat has a setback facility, helping a heating system to achieve greater levels of efficiency and giving greater flexibility of control.

EnergyMaster HP540 Cylinder

Nu-Heat has launched the latest in its range of specialised hot water cylinders for use with heat pumps. This version is the largest to date, with an actual capacity for 542 litres. There are two models available: non-solar and solar.  

The cylinders are ideal for use in bigger properties with multiple bathrooms/ensuites or for commercial applications, and have been developed to work well with the Hitachi Yutaki-M twin fan air source heat pump and NIBE’s F1145 and F1330 ground source heat pumps.

The coil is 3m² (the same as the smaller cylinders) to match with the heat pump output.

The EnergyMaster HP540 Solar has 148 litres dedicated solar volume, and 394 litres of volume heated by the heat pump (equal to the smaller cylinder version).

Both cylinders are standard ceiling height so are able to fit through a typical UK doorway. They are made of stainless steel and come with a 25-year warranty.
