Domestic RHI – set to revolutionise the UK’s home heating market

Nu-Heat welcomes DECC’s confirmation of the payment levels available under the Domestic RHI.

“The industry has been waiting a long time for these figures and the announcement made by DECC is not only what we wanted to hear but necessary, also,” says Adrian Troop, Nu-Heat Sales Director.

“Homeowners that had put their plans to invest on hold and those now interested in heat pumps and/or solar thermal now have clarity on tariff rates; a clear financial incentive to commit to the installation of a renewable heating system.”

The much anticipated RHI tariff rates are encouraging and at the higher end of those suggested by DECC in its consultation of the scheme.

Long term RHI tariff support has been set at:

Air source heat pump: 7.3p/kWh

Ground source heat pump: 18.8p/kWh

Solar thermal: 19.2p/kWh at least

What is the RHI?

The Renewable Heat Incentive aims to repay the installation cost of a renewable technology, such as a heat pump or solar thermal, meaning that homeowners can protect themselves from ever increasing energy prices. Payments will be back dated to mid-2009 when the scheme was first announced and will be paid over a 7 year period.

The Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP) remains available in the run up to the launch in Spring 2014 with the value of the grant subtracted from any RHI payments.

Those off the gas grid could cut their fuel bills by thousands of pounds a year by taking advantage of the Domestic RHI. In addition to and unlike the RHPP the RHI is now also available to those dwellings that are on the gas grid, in an aim to encourage better practice. Payments for those on the gas grid will also be related to predicted efficiency performance.

The renewable technology must be MCS accredited, as must the installer, for the system to be eligible under the RHI. Installers are advised to carry out relevant training on renewable products and consider becoming MCS accredited in their own right.

Nu-Heat’s full range of air and ground source heat pumps and solar thermal products are all accredited under MCS.

Energy & Climate Change minister Greg Barker said the announcement sent a clear signal to industry that the Coalition is 110% committed to boosting and sustaining growth in this sector, and stressed that government remains committed to opening the scheme for applications in Spring 2014.

Nu-Heat’s with you all the way

“Over recent years we’ve been working to ensure that we offer the ideal combination of products, design skills and support for installers to be able to offer their customers energy efficient and renewable systems, from underfloor heating and solar thermal through to air source and ground source heat pumps,” says Adrian Troop, Nu-Heat’s Sales & Marketing Director.

With any system supplied by Nu-Heat, our experienced designers ensure that the greatest levels of energy efficiency are achieved and that installation is as straightforward as possible. All specific design parameters of a property are included, such as location, building construction, floor construction, air tightness, heat loss and how a building is to be used. For underfloor heating, we also consider heat transfer characteristics of the floor construction, the location of manifolds and the final floor coverings.

For a heat pump project, we undertake precise calculations to ensure that the heat pump is sized correctly. Our specialist software runs a simulation of performance over an average year, based on local monthly weather data. Heat pump systems are designed in accordance with MIS 3005, which stipulates that the heat pump must cover 100% of the load for all but the coldest 1% of the year. Nu-Heat’s design software fully complies with all MIS MCS standards and our experience with design and supply will give installers total confidence in installation and performance.

Service and support

All installers have a dedicated Nu-Heat Account Manager who is available to discuss existing projects and help with decisions for future ones. Free technical support is available from our team of engineers and sales staff are trained to a high level, understanding the more complex technical issues associated with renewable systems and the MCS. Nu-Heat also supplies extremely high quality user guides for the homeowner, helping to ensure that they have confidence with how to use their new heating system and reducing the likelihood of call-backs.

 MCS support

For installers new to the renewables market, Nu-Heat offers assistance through the MCS process, helping with accreditation and on-going compliance. Inclusive technical support is available throughout an installation, including commissioning and inspection of a heat pump system prior to MCS inspection. Our comprehensive Customer Handover Pack includes complete documentation on everything needed to comply with MCS guidelines and eligibility for the Premium Payment and RHI schemes where applicable, fulfilling a large part of the MCS requirement for each installation.

 Renewables range

Nu-Heat’s renewable product range includes a variety of MCS approved heat pumps, allowing us to specify the right size and most appropriate model, whether ground source or air source, for each project. We also offer solar thermal systems for domestic hot water, including a single panel option for more compact homes. Our range of hot water cylinders includes a 540-litre option, well matched to the larger heat pumps (both air and ground source) and more compact hot water cylinders that fit into a smaller home.

Integration is one of Nu-Heat’s core skills and our heat pumps, solar thermal collectors and warm water underfloor heating all integrate to provide an energy efficient system. Each system is supplied with comprehensive M&E ‘docking’ drawings to illustrate exactly how the various components should be fitted and then linked to each other.

Heat pumps, particularly when partnered with underfloor heating, offer a potential solution not only for new build but also for older properties, as long as the building meets the required insulation levels. This is usually achieved through a combination of improvements to walls, attic space and glazing.

For such properties, Nu-Heat has developed a retrofit underfloor heating floor construction option, LoPro®10 to offer a solution to the problem of floor height build up. LoPro®10 offers one of the lowest profiles currently available at 15mm plus tile, wood or carpet floor finish.

LoPro10® panels are of a composite gypsum construction giving low thermal resistance and high-density properties that provide high thermal output compared to similar low height plywood and chipboard based systems. LoPro10® also has one-third less thermal mass than a screed floor, allowing it to heat up and cool down rapidly.

“The heating and plumbing industry has had to work ever harder during the current economic climate,” says Adrian. “However, we believe that Nu-Heat has been doing everything possible to help installers achieve as much business success as possible by working in partnership with them to help develop their markets and by providing products and support backed by outstanding technical knowledge.”

Our commercial capability

Although we’re traditionally known for our expertise with domestic properties, Nu-Heat has been becoming more involved in commercial projects almost by default through customers who already know of our reputation for excellence and want to make use of it. Over the past few years our skills with both underfloor heating and renewable products have been utilized in care homes, social housing, churches and schools.

In order to support the bigger projects that we are being asked to handle, Nu-Heat has set up a specialized Commercial Team. The team has been overseeing design for builds such as Talbot Way in Letchworth, a mixture of private and social housing that is using our integrated underfloor heating, air source heat pumps and solar thermal for the various heating and domestic hot water elements of the development.

Commercial Design offers full system control logic for such systems and heat pump design is carried out to the MCS requirement MIS3005. This ensures that heat pumps are correctly sized and should be able to almost entirely heat a building without electric or other back up, under all but the most extreme conditions.

Nu-Heat has added a very competitively priced, 20mm tubing to its underfloor heating offer, alongside the 14mm we specify for domestic projects. This addition to our range means that we have full capability to design for:

  • Non domestic properties
  • Multiple dwellings
  • Linked and communal heat pumps

For apartments we will continue to specify 14mm, but the supply of 20mm gives us the capability required for larger projects; for example, over the last year we have seen an increase in requests to design and supply underfloor heating for care homes. One of the key benefits of the 20mm tubing is that larger areas can be covered from one manifold and with coils that are up to 200m long, up to 60m² can be covered by each port on the manifold.

As with domestic projects, Nu-Heat provides high quality customized CAD drawings showing all mechanical pipework and valves as well as electrical connections and supplies easy-to- follow installation manuals and manuals tailored to the heat source.
