Nu-Heat Customer Support Engineer, John Cornish, has completed a gruelling week long Arctic Challenge to raise funds for Age UK Exeter.

The week involved various challenges in freezing temperatures including dog sledging, building and digging shelters to sleep in and cross country skiing.

John spent three days sleeping outside, one of which was supposed to be spent in a snow hole, but he drew the short straw when the shelter was too small to sleep in for the night:

“We thought the snow hole would be big enough for three of us – but it wasn’t!  I ended up sleeping under the stars.  I had a good sleeping bag so I wasn’t too cold, but it was a bit odd feeling the snow fall when you are trying to sleep!”

Even when staying in a cabin for a couple of nights, there were no luxuries:

“We stayed in a cabin to begin with, but there was no running water or electricity.  We were eating by candlelight and melting snow for our water.  The toilet was 50 metres away, so if you needed to go in the night you had to brave the icy cold temperatures!”

John is hoping to raise over £2500 for Age UK Exeter and is hopeful others will get involved in the future to support charities.

“It was harder than I thought it would be and there were times when I thought ‘why am I doing this?’, but the whole experience was brilliant – a real challenge.  I’d definitely recommend it, and hopefully some other members of the Nu-Heat team will give it a try next year.”

Martyn Rogers, Director at Age UK Exeter, was impressed with Nu-Heat’s support:  “We were delighted that John signed up for the Arctic Challenge and his input has raised invaluable funds towards our work with isolated and vulnerable older people.  We really appreciate the support Nu-Heat have shown in helping John achieve his fundraising target – its great to have a local company raising funds for local people!”
