Dream eco home with underfloor heating and integrated heat pump
The chance discovery of a rural plot near the village of Trottiscliffe in Kent, sparked the start of a self-build adventure for Gordon and Joyce Perrie.
Solution: Zoned underfloor heating solution with integrated 10kW air source heat pump
A vision revisited
The plot came with planning permission for a 2,000ft² detached house, but rather than sticking with the design set out by the existing planning, Gordon and Joyce went back to the drawing board to create their vision. The result was an ‘upside-down’ (bedrooms on the ground floor, kitchen and living areas upstairs), oak-framed, eco house, set into the hill with a glazed frontage that makes the most of the site’s stunning panoramic views.
Gordon and Joyce were keen to make their new home as efficient as possible, and chose to team an air source heat pump with underfloor heating.
“We always knew that we wanted to have underfloor heating throughout the house, and love that there are no radiators to get in the way,” says Gordon.
“We find the underfloor heating very comfortable – the house stays at a consistent temperature, the system is economical and silent, and the settings are easy to understand.
“Having zoned underfloor heating makes the system even more efficient as we can control the temperature and schedule of each area separately.”
Gordon adds: “We were pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to integrate an air source heat pump to provide warm water for the underfloor heating and supply all of the property’s hot water. The RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) payments that we receive for running the heat pump are an added bonus.”
“We liked the fact that Nu-Heat did the entire system design in-house themselves,” explains Gordon. “The support and information that we received from them before, during and after the installation was really good.”
“The Nu-Heat Registered Installers did a great job. The underfloor heating installation didn’t cause any disruption to the rest of the build, and the heat pump installation and commissioning also went well.”
Integrated UFH and renewables
Underfloor heating is ideal for use with renewable solutions such as the air source heat pump that fuels Gordon and Joyce’s heating and hot water. As well as being an eco-option, using a heat pump with underfloor heating can further reduce the system’s running costs.
