Heat Pumps & UFH

heatpump.jpg

It is easy to see why more and more self-builders are embracing the idea of using geothermal heat pumps to warm their homes. Despite the high cost of purchasing and installing the systems, the idea of getting several kilowatts of energy out for every kilowatt of energy you pay for appeals both to the pocket and the ecological conscience.

Warm water underfloor heating too, is equally appealing. The benefits of uncluttered living space, the feeling of natural warmth and reduced running costs are now well established. Add to this the fact that, on one hand, underfloor heating operates at much lower input water temperatures than are required by radiators whilst, on the other, the efficiency of heat pumps is greatest at low output temperatures, and you seem to have a combination that is the stuff of dreams.

Neither heat pumps nor underfloor heating are new technology. The combination is already widely used in many countries such as Sweden where the two are regarded as natural partners. So why should we be cautious?
