Can I have UFH in a single room or extension?

Yes! You certainly can have underfloor heating (UFH) in one room or area, and radiators elsewhere in your home.

However, the two systems work independently of one another, and each should have its own separate flow/return connection to your boiler. This allows you to adjust the flow temperatures to the optimum for each system – underfloor heating requires lower flow temperatures than radiators, and it is controlled independently of radiators via room thermostats.

Benefits of UFH in single room or extensions

Underfloor heating is ideal for single rooms and extensions – particularly for modern, open plan areas with limited wall space:

Design freedom

It allows you far greater freedom across your room’s layout and design.
No radiators

Independently controlled

Individual room thermostats provide fingertip controls of your heating levels for each space.
Better control

Even and comfortable heat

It gives a wonderfully even, ambient heat throughout each room.

Do I need an UFH kit or a bespoke designed system?

This is a good question. Our underfloor heating kits are ideal for single room installations and come complete with everything that a competent DIY-er or professional installer needs to lay the pipework for a single zone (you’ll need a heating engineer and electrician to connect and commission your system).

However, if you are installing underfloor heating in more than one room, we recommend choosing a company who provide detailed design drawings, using room-by-room heat loss calculations, and can support you during the installation of the system and for the life of the product.

We have our own in-house designers who give full support to customers throughout the process of planning and installation, as well as lifetime technical support.

Underfloor heating design for a single room extension

Are you extending an existing room?

If you are extending an existing room that has previously been heated using radiators then there is no need to remove them. You can leave the radiators in-situ and still use underfloor heating in the newly extended area even if the floor construction is different and the two areas adjoin one another.

We can factor this into the design, allowing you to combine the two systems and control the newly extended room in its entirety as a single zone.

And if, by extending, you now have several different floor types in one room (e.g. a combination of screed and suspended timber) then our full design service will create a plan to enable you to extend your pipework across both, to cover the whole area.

Integrating radiators & UFH over several floors

You can put underfloor heating in your new extension even if you have other rooms in the house, and on the same storey, that are heated by existing radiators.

The radiators and underfloor heating will each need their own separate flow/return connection to your boiler to allow for the fact that underfloor heating requires lower flow temperatures than radiators. You will also need to install a separate manifold(s) to control the underfloor heating. But there is no need to replace any radiators at the same time.

We recommend installing a bespoke, fully designed system which is tailored to each room layout to ensure that you later enjoy optimum heat output – particularly if the floor construction varies between storeys (e.g. you have joists supporting the upper levels and solid floors downstairs).

Underfloor Heating vs Radiators

How will my UFH work with my boiler & existing radiators?

Underfloor heating can work seamlessly in combination with existing radiator schemes even if you are extending a room where there are radiators already in place. You can leave the radiators where they are and just install underfloor heating in the new areas.

The main thing is to ensure that the two systems have their own separate connection to your boiler. The underfloor heating will then be controlled independently from the radiators using room thermostats.

Some customers may need a small minor adjustment (a valve insertion) to their boiler, but all this is explained within our manual.

If your extension forms part of a larger renovation see our page on retrofitting UFH.

Other considerations around UFH in a single room or extension

There are several considerations when planning your system, such as where to place the manifold unit(s) and what floor finish/es to apply (e.g. tiles, engineered boards, or carpet).

We recommend you talk to your supplier before purchasing your system so that they can advise you on the best options for your property.

Cost of UFH in a single room or extension

The cost of your underfloor heating depends on the type of system (overlay or screed?), who is installing it, and the size/scale of your project.

Importance of UFH design

As stated before, we always advise you get an expert to design your underfloor heating system over several rooms/storeys, particularly when laying pipework between joists, or in a retrofit project.

They will ensure you get the optimum heat output, based on the room layout, heat losses, ceiling height, and the joist patterns.

Our in-house project engineers deliver a dedicated service to customers and our design team are available to provide advice – including full and detailed plans, if required.

When choosing an UFH company

Underfloor heating systems that have been sourced from a single supplier should provide everything that would be needed for a successful installation, including fully compatible components that will deliver a confirmed and verified heat output.

We offer award winning customers support, room-by-room heat loss designs, and lifetime technical support. So, you can simply sit back and enjoy the warmth!
